Peter Shire since the 1970's has been working with the interaction of industrial design, fine art and craft. He has worked in architecture, furniture, and fashion, but has been enormously successful in ceramics. During the 1984 summer Olympics in Los Angeles Peter was a part of the team with Sussman/Presza working on the colors/design/look/feel of the venues. This lamp is a take-off of the design of the design that you see in the poster, also drawn by Peter Shire of the village at UCLA. Peter worked with Ettore Sottsass at Memphis for several years, during the 1980's in Milan.
The Jerde Partnership in Los Angeles was the architecture firm that handled the design and construction management of the venues. When the Olympics were over The Partnership contracted Peter to make these lamps for the staff and special members of the team of designers. Each person paid for their own, and only about 200 were made. Some people chose to get two.
This lamp has a steel base approximately 2 feet in diameter that in turn sits upon three steel unfinished balls. The base and the twisted stem is medium yellow over steel. The twisted stem is approximately 4' 8.5". The light shines up toward the ceiling from one large bulb through the power-coated aluminum shades. They are in blue, red, purple and topped by what looks exactly like a grey toilet bowl float. This lamp needs a tall and large room, obviously. The poster is not for sale, and not included in this sale.
The condition of this lamp is very good, but there are some scratches on the paint that are minor. Please request more photos if you are interested. I have never seen one of these for sale and really have no idea what it might be worth, but I think it is wonderful.
