Pheasant

Original Watercolour Painting

by Roland Green (1896 - 1972)

Provenance: Rowland Green - Peter Oliver - Sygun Museum

A wonderful watercolour painting depicting a pheasant in long grass by highly regarded 20th century bird painter Roland Green.  The painting is a fine example of the artist's work, the details of the birds are faithfully reproduced in Green's highly accomplished style.  The painting is in very fine original condition, the colours remains vibrant and unfaded, the paper is free of foxing, marking or other imperfections.  The painting is behind glass and is mounted and framed.  The painting is signed lower center.

Provenance - This painting came to us as part of an extensive collection of Roland Green paintings, drawings, postcards, letters and ephemera which were given by Roland Green to Mr Peter Oliver the then secretary of the Honiton Arts Society.  The collection includes a postcard that reads 'Dear Peter, Thanks for your very appreciative letter I looked these out yesterday, think they may help you with detail.  Will send some more of flying birds as I come across them.  In haste, Roland'.  Please see the photograph section for a copy of this postcard and it's envelope.

Roland Green was born in Rainham, Kent and was a well regarded artist who specialised in bird and mammal painting, with annual one-man shows of paintings and separately published etchings at Ackermann Galleries. Among his etchings were snipe, Canada geese, mallard and kingfishers. He lectured on bird watching and how to draw birds, with a particular interest in birds in flight. He painted bird studies in watercolours, also large frescoes in oil.

Green's work makes many hundreds, often thousands of pounds at auction, to view results please see the snapshots of auction results in the photograph section below;

Art as an Investment

In these uncertain financial times tangible assets such as gold and art are being recommended as a safer alternative to stocks and shares by many leading experts.

“Companies go bust, artists don’t,” said David Douglas an Irish art expert of the recent economic turmoil.

Damien Hirst's phenomenally successful sale at Sotheby's recently illustrates that high end art is able to prosper in an economic downturn.  Less well publicised are the examples of the many thousands of lesser known artists whose work continues to increase in price when offered at auction.
