Philip Reisman
(1904 - 1992)
Original
Watercolor
"Dog
Lovers"
Framed
under glass with double matting.
Work
measures 15 x 12-3/4".
Frame
Measures 19-3/8 x22".
12.5 x
14-7/8" at mat board opening.
This
enchanting watercolor features a man and a woman, seated and facing each
other for conversation. The man peers over his "lap dog", a
standard poodle to engage the woman.
Philip
Reisman is a very well listed American artist. He was a WPA artist
most closely associated with New York City.
He is
referenced in a litany of books, including "Philip Reisman" by Lincoln
Kirstein, published 1933. Other book references include
Davenport's, Who was Who in American Art, and Museum catalogs from the
Smithsonian and Whitney.
Reisman has
work in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, the
Whitney, the Smithsonian (Hirshorn Museum), the New York Public Library,
the Mobile Museum of Art, the National Academy of Design Museum,
the Wichita Art Museum, and the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art.
The
watercolor is in excellent condition. It is probably due for a
re-matting, as the frame it currently resides in is older and the mat
board is probably not ph neutral. There is a label on the reverse
from Harbor Gallery of Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island.
