-Thomas Andrews-At 28 years old, in 1901, Thomas Andrews was made manager of the construction works at Harland and Wolff. At 35, he became Managing Director of the entire shipyard; just in time to oversee the design and construction of the 3 planned Olympic Class Liners: the Olympic, Titanic and the Britannic. He was on board the Titanic when it struck the berg, and ever the workaholic, he, like many others, didn't feel the impact, and it was only when Captain Smith sent for him that he was alerted to the fact that something was amiss. Andrews conducted a rapid tour of the ship to assess the extent of the damage, but he must have known long before he returned to the bridge to report to Smith that Titanic's fate was sealed. In the end, Andrews was reported to have stood alone in the 1st class smoking room, apparently stunned into a dysfunctional state, staring at Norman Wilkinson's painting 'Plymouth Harbor' that hung above the Adam-style fireplace. After giving no response to a steward's query that he '...have a try for it', Mr. Andrews was never seen again, his body was never recovered, and the world had lost a brilliant shipbuilder and a true gentlemen. It's interesting to note the cruel irony in that Andrews' original design for the Titanic called for a second row of lifeboats to be placed alongside each row of eight that were installed on the ship, and yet he went down with the sinking because there weren't enough lifeboats, while J. Bruce Ismay, the chairman of White Star Line who overruled Andrews' design, claiming the additional lifeboats weren't necessary and would only result in too much deck clutter, survived the sinking. This new Sepia Tone Print of the original archive is on Heavy Premium Glossy Photo Paper in a 5" x 7" format, (exact dimensions may vary) in flawless condition. Please
