On August 25, 1944, the Free French Forces and the Allies entered Paris in triumph. To Picasso, as to many others, this day marked the end of a nightmare: the continual fear, the constant worry over the fate of countless friends, were gone. Typical of Picassos concentration on his work and of the way his imagination invented pictorial forms for his experiences, is the painting he executed during the first feverish days of the liberation of Paris: a free copy of Poussins Bacchanal, a work in which he found the spirit of those thrilling days.
In the fall of 1944 the French artists paid Picasso the tribute to which he was entitled for his irreproachable behavior during the years of oppression— unlike some French artists, Picasso never made any compromises with the occupying power. At the Salon dAutomne of 1944, held less than two months after the liberation of Paris, he was the guest of honor: seventy-four paintings and five sculptures were exhibited in a large room, to honor the master who had been hated by the Nazis and even more by the reactionary elements of the Vichy regime, but who had kept unswervingly to his course.
In those days he took a step that seemed to have nothing in common with his artistic interests: he joined the French Communist Party. In an interview published in Lettres Françaises for March 24, 1945, Picasso himself defined the artistic significance of his step: What do you suppose an artist is? If a painter, an imbecile who has nothing but eyes, nothing but ears if he is a musician, a lyre at every level of his heart if he is a poet, nothing but muscles if he is a boxer? Quite the contrary, he is a political being, constantly aware of what is going on in the world, whether it be harrowing, bitter, or sweet, and he cannot help being shaped by it. How would it be possible not to take an interest in other people, to withdraw in some ivory tower so as not to share existence with them? No, painting is not interior decoration. It is an instrument of war for offense and defense against the enemy.
From this time dates the powerful still life shown here, and the series of views of Paris. The paintings were executed in a vigorous, simple formal language; Picasso has rediscovered things in their modest form and dignity. But he also discovers new aspects of them, endows them with new significance. Thus the juxtaposition of three simple objects on a table—a pitcher, a candle, and a pot—becomes a monument to the quiet dignity of everyday things, a monument also to the creative power of the artist who endowed them with such striking form and the capacity for enduring existence.
Pablo Ruiz Picasso (October 25, 1881 – April 8, 1973) was a Spanish painter and sculptor. His full name was Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso. One of the most recognized figures in 20th century art, he is best known as the co-founder, along with Georges Braque, of cubism. (Data source: Wikipedia)
Vintage 1996 book print on poster type paper. Excellent condition. This lavish book print is very beautiful with its wide margins, making this very suitable for framing. A great conversation piece from the collection of vintage plates printed and published by Harry N. Abrams, Inc., NY in 1996. Harry N. Abrams, Inc. presented in this collection, reprints of backlist favorites designed to sell at popular prices. Published under the Abradale imprint, these prints were produced to the same high standards of quality for which Abrams is celebrated.
Excellent condition. Clean, no stains, no rips, no tears. The print is crisp and sharp. The detail of this print is just beautiful. This high-quality print is clean, not discolored or faded, and is in excellent condition. It is printed on nice heavy stock, making it very suitable for framing. The back side of the print has unrelated text which does not show through to the front because of the poster quality paper it was printed on. This artistic print is a nice alternative to an original copy of the masterpiece, if you could find one, which you would expect to pay in the hundreds, or perhaps even thousands, depending upon the condition. This print is ready for mounting and framing and will look wonderful in practically any frame, antique, or otherwise.

About my prints... The prints I sell are mostly from vintage and antique portfolios and books, making them excellent alternatives to expensive art prints, which you can expect to pay much more for in today's market. The publishers knew their work would be closely examined and under intensive scrutiny by art critics. When compared to expensive posters, the colors in these prints are often quite noticeably more vivid and sharp. In some cases these prints are the only possible way to acquire copies of the rare paintings, engravings, and photographic images you'll find in my eBay store. Add a frame and you can enjoy this print and it's aesthetic appeal without spending a fortune!
My shipping procedures... A lot of care and expense is put into making sure your prints arrive undamaged. Prints are carefully bagged in plastic sleeves, gently rolled, and mailed in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube. Larger orders and Priority Mail orders are usually shipped flat between sturdy cardboard using creative methods to prevent the USPS from bending or damaging your prints. A large tube mailer may be used for larger prints depending upon what appears to be the safest way to ship. PLEASE BE SURE TO HANDLE YOUR PRINTS WITH CARE TO AVOID DAMAGING THEM WHEN REMOVING THEM FROM THE TUBE OR PACKAGE.
