Making a name for oneself in the often impenetrable watchmaking industry is no simple task. Master watchmaker Pierre Kunz has not only succeeded in launching his very own brand of complicated timepieces…he has even made it look easy. Born in Bern, Switzerland, in 1959, Pierre Kunz has been involved in the watchmaking industry for more than twenty years.
After completing his studies at the celebrated Vallée de Joux watchmaking school, he worked for a number of years in the workshops of Victorin Piguet where he constructed a variety of grande complications from start to finish.
Although he opened his own business restoring antique clocks for a while, it was not long before he returned to working for some of Switzerland’s leading brands to make more grande complications, his first love. Kunz was given the opportunity of a lifetime when Franck Muller offered him the chance to create his own models at the famous Watchland Park at Genthod, a location perpetually associated with creativity.
Overlooking the shores of Lake Geneva directly opposite Mont Blanc, Watchland is home to a host of master craftsmen and talented artisans dedicated to maintaining Switzerland’s time-honored watchmaking traditions.
Sport and technology: the aesthetic in the service of the complication. With a new Havana transparent (skeleton) dial, the watch is brilliant. The hours and minutes of retrograde chronograph are shown on two slides and the AM or PM plays towers, morning Luminova Black, or White for evening. Amazing color combination too, the bronze steel is very unusual and looks great. A technological and design wonder!
The featured watch is a Limited Edition Pierre Kunz Sport Collection Spirit of Challenge G 403 Sport PVD Chronograph with Double Retrograde capability. It is encased in Stainless Steel and measures 44mm in diameter. It is an Automatic Chronograph with a Silver-Toned Guilloche Dial with an AM/PM Indicator at 6 o'clock, Retrograde Hour Register at 2 o'clock and Retrograde Minute Register at 10 o'clock for the Chronograph. The Minutes and Hour Registers have skeleton sections so you can observe the inner mechanics of the watch as you look down. It also has Anti-reflective Sapphire crystal and comes on a textured Pierre Kunz Black Rubber Strap with a matching Deployment Clasp. 42-hour Power Reserve, Water Resistant to 100 meters/330 feet.
Personal Note--Wow! This is one of the very coolest watch I've ever seen. The dial is so unusual, it looks incredible. I LOVE the way the Arabic Numerals are each in their own trapezoid shaped window. Also, the complications of the double retrograde functions with the chronograph, as well as the fact that it is an automatic watch make it a stand-out piece! It is one of a Limited Edition of only 249 watches worldwide and has the most incredible details you can find in a watch. You may never see another one like this again!
