Pilot Steel Elite Fountain Pen 18K WG Nib, Sticker
Here is one of Pilot's most famous fountain pens ever, a Pilot Elite. These pens set the standard for most other Japanese pens from the mid '60s through the '80s. And here is the distinctive stainless steel version of the Elite.
During its lifetime the Elite line was redesigned over and over, retaining only the short size and the script Elite logo. According to a Pilot ad from the mid 70's this would have been the perfect pen for Sir Isaac Newton. Who can say?
This pen is still new old stock, and has its original price sticker. The date stamp on the nib is H776 which indicates this pen was made in July of 1976 at Pilot's Hiratsuka plant.
Pocket size pens like this were very popular in Japan from the 60's to the 80's. As the diagram below illustrates, they have a short barrel coupled with a long nib section into which the ink cartridge fits deeply. The long cap corresponds to the length of the nib section.
When capped, these pens are the perfect compact size for carrying in your pocket. When the long cap is posted on the short barrel, these pens become full sized, and perfectly balanced for comfortable writing. Although no company produces them today, Japanese pocket pens are enjoying new popularity in the west now as collectors and users recognize the ingenuity of this practical design.
This particular model was designed in the 1970s. Pilot made their Myu, Capless and Custom, and Elite pens out of stainless steel with grooves which they filled with black enamel. Soon all the pen companies were making steel black striped and cross striped pens. So this was popular because it was both a pocket pen and a steel pen.
It had traces of ink indicating it had been dipped in ink and tested at the stationery shop where I found it. I thoroughly cleaned the nib in an ultrasonic bath.
These pens feel great, and since the finish is brushed steel, they continue looking great even after years of abuse. The black lines are recessed, away from exposure to rubbing. This pen also has a spring type clip to adjust to any thickness.
over 30 stroke kanji |
This pen has a huge 18K White Gold nib The nib is a fine point, which is the most popular size on Japanese pens where common kanji characters can have over 20 strokes, and uncommon ones can go over 30 strokes.
This pen takes standard Pilot / Namiki ink cartridges or an ink converter for those who prefer bottled ink. I will include an ink cartridge with this pen.
Optional Ink converter I can include a Pilot / Namiki standard squeeze type converter (CON-20) for an additional charge. Just add $4.00 to your Paypal payment in the "Seller Discounts (-) or Charges (+)" area, and include a note to remind me what the extra money is for. (Some people have said their invoice will not allow them to add an extra amount; If you have trouble, you can always initiate a new Paypal payment for the amount of the converter alone or for both the pen and converter together).
