In the pictures that we see here is a lovely pine blanket chest constructed with hand dove-tails. The external sides are made of single pine and are very thick. Note the molding around the top; which when closed covers the top of the sides, thus presenting a more polished look.
While there is a lock, the key has long since been lost. The internal small box is secured, hand doved, without the use of any metal hardware. The hinges are inset into the sides and top. It is difficult to date the piece, but it certainly appears to have been made at some time during the 1800's. The wood sides are 1" thick and not 5/4", therefore we believe that it was made during the later part of the century.
This is an excellent piece suitable for a coffee table or as intended, to be a blanket chest at the foot of a bed.
The chest measures 37 3/4"x 16 1/4" high, 14" deep. Box inside 5" deep and 13 1/2" long.
