IT ALL STARTED in Redwood City, California, in a garage owned by Karsten Solheim. A frustrated golfer, he set out to design a putter to improve his own golf game. The design was two Popsicle sticks glued to two sugar cubes with a shaft in the middle. Solheim tested his idea by having a neighbor weld some metal to the back of the heel and toe of a putter, changes that helped the club head to complete a stroke. The next day Solheim tried out his putter on a local practice green and as people walked by they remarked on the 'PING' sound it made. They also spotted that he was holing more than his fair share of putts, achieved by maximizing its weight distribution. With less weight in the middle of the putter, there was less twisting when the ball was struck off-center on the putter face.
It was the world's first heel-toe balanced putter and changed the game of golf for ever.
Solheim's innovations can be found in virtually every putter on the market today, as well as in most popular sets of irons.
It all began with his ringing P-I-NNNNNNNNNN-G putter.
On March 23, 1959, Solheim filed paperwork at the US Patent Office. Three years latter he received Patent No. 3,042,405 for his 1-A putter.
