Most wood carvers would give their eyeteeth to own a good wood carving duplicator machine.However when available they are costly.They are also quite complex in construction usually which makes it difficult to build one.

This wood carving duplicator can be built for very little and is of very simple construction.It uses a high speed rotary tool for a cutter.The Dremel mototool is a well known example and there are a number of other makes which will work equally well.

Avoid really cheap low powered carvers if you are going to buy one.They will not do a satisfactory job for you.You can buy a good rotary tool on eBay if you can,t find one locally and used ones go for quite a low price sometimes.

The plan for this tool is extremely simple.In fact only 10 small pieces of wood,8 carriage bolts and 7 wood screws are needed for the job.We would suggest using hardwood such as maple since it can be shaped to much closer tolerances than soft wood and is much more rigid.The small quantity of wood you need will not be expensive.

For tools needed to make the duplicator an electric drill and a small saw will do the work and of course a screwdriver and a wrench to tighten the bolts.It doesn't get any simpler than this for such a great little machine that will do a really good job for you.

You will need a round ball cutter and a fine pointed tip cutter for the rotary tool.You will be pleasantly surprised at the quality of work that this machine can turn out.See the pictures of the bust of General MacArthur which was duplicated very well.

You can duplicate any kind of three dimensional object with this machine as long as it is within the size that the 12 inch arms can reach.Ornamental carvings of all kinds can be turned out accurately.Great for anyone making wooden fishing plugs to which is a good little business in itself.

I have seen really fine wooden repro firearms made this way which look absolutely realistic when finished with some graphite to look like metal.The bust in the pictures is a good example of what you can do.

I should also mention wooden duck decoys.This machine is great for turning out this type of item and you can sell them for a really good price.Check what nice decoys fetch on eBay or in local antique stores and shows.

If you participate in craft fairs you can make an endless variety of wood carvings for sale.This is just the greatest tool for all these types of enterprise or hobby.It saves so much time for the carver and you can hand finish the roughed out carvings to the final finished shape if you want to be an artist.
