A true curiosity, the cards have the correct amount of symbols, but no numbers in the corners. To tell the face cards apart, the Kings have crowns, the Jacks do not, and the Queens are women. The 'club' symbols are different than any I have seen before. This deck must have belonged to my grandmother, who was born in 1885 in Sweden. The pencil writing on the box says 'Astrid' and 'Karolina'. My grandmother was Karolina. I have tried to find information on "Kristiania", and "Kort Stampel" (on the Ace of Spades). Almost all searches end up at a Danish or Norwegian website, and I can't read any of it. I found something called a 'Kort Stampel map tax' that was in effect from 1929 to 1992, but this deck of cards is not a map. Kristiania is an old name for Oslo, Norway, but could also be the name of a company that manufactured playing cards. This deck is complete, standard size, and in very good condition for it's age. No cards are missing, or torn, or bent, or frayed on the edges. I think the box is not original, as it doesn't match the back of the cards, but it is a good fit and protects the cards from damage. The box is not in as good condition as the cards, but still not bad for it's age. |
