This old pottery piece has such wonderful character.

I believe this wall pocket is vintage ... if not; it sure looks so as it is weathered and has the priceless time-worn look. It is made of pottery or clay. It may be marked, but it is not clear enough to read. If I were to guess, I would say it is Mexico; a Mexican Arts and Craft piece. It is very charming with these two big birds perched on each side of this textured pocket that looks like a twig or straw nest with applied leaves and berries adorning the front. Birds were once a bright yellow-green, but the color has faded over the years. The birds are hollow and mold made as indicated by mold lines down the back and front. They are attached to the sides of the nest/pocket.

Size: It is quite a large piece ... 11" in length ... about 9" at the widest and about 4" depth from the wall. 1¾ pounds.

Condition: Time-worn and awesome. Remarkable that the birds have not gotten chipped or broken over the years. On one of the birds, along the mold line on the back; the paint is chipped and and a small area that looks like shallow pieces of clay may be missing. This may just be where the mold ridge was smoothed. There are three firing cracks in the nest/pocket (marked and noted) ... one is about 1½" from the top opening behind the stem on the berries. The start of it can be seen on the top edge of the pocket opening and the rest is behind the stem. There is a tiny chip/stress line on the inside where the hanging hole is and another chip/stress line on the back/right side of the pocket. I do not believe any of these will interfere with the strength of the piece.

It was purchased from a liquidation sale of a "Trading Post" (antique store) that had been closed for a number of years.
