I completed this horn and the detailed strap today. I based this horn and the designs from a French and Indian War example originating from the variousnative symbols. The horn is 11inches in length straight across from tip to end. It is 2 1/2 inches in diameter at the base.

The neck of this horn was filed smooth with three decorative rings cut into it which make a handsome appearance. This is all done with a hand file. The butt end is secured with a pine plug. It is held to the horn with wooden pegs. A squared "twist" staple was attached for securing the strap.

The scrimshaw design work goes fully around the entire horn so it can be worn on either side of the body. The pattern was copied from a historic example and is a series of objects including a canoe with seven paddles, two turtle motifs, two fish designs, a tomahawk and war club, a wampum belt design, and a corn motif. There are interlocking geometric patterns also running around the horn. 

The strap is heavy green wool and a darl maroon red backing and edging. It measures 2 1/8 inches in width by 60 inches in lenght including the walnut brown deerskin tabs at the ends. The beadwork is all done with #8 early style French glass pony beads. These beads come from the same producer, using the same equipment as they did in the 18th century. Inside the pony bead edings is designs is a center line of white wampum beads stitched to the green wool. All stitching was done with a natural linen thread. I left the strap long for those who require extra length over heavy winter blanket coats. If you desire I can alter the strap to your personal length before I ship it off to you.

Please note this is a very labor intensive project. For this reason, and the time involved, I will need to set the starting price to compensate for my amount of work invested.

This historic powder horn would make a nice addition to anyone reenacting a longhunter or a woodland Indian. It also makes a very handsome addition to any frontier motif in your home, office, or den.
