Prayer at Valley Forge Framed Print of George Washington at Valley Forge - painted by Arnold Friberg This lovely framed print measures 22" tall x 28" wide overall. The image size measures 11" tall x 18" wide. It's double matted, using a rustic, leather-look mat. Originally painted in 1976 to honor our bi-centennial year, and recognized as a masterpiece of patriotic american art. This picture expresses a powerful affirmation of faith, patriotic duty, and the spiritual depths in the founding of our country. A great gift for the history buff, a new office, a favorite teacher, the school/church library, etc. While Washington is known for his honesty by the famed cherry tree story, a much lesser known story about him is one of my favorites. It seems, that during the battle of Germantown (Oct 1777) the opposing General's dog (reputed to be a fox terrier) wandered into Washington's camp. It is said that Washington called a cease-fire, and ordered the dog returned to it's owner (which was determined by the inscription on it's collar). I found it interesting that in my research of this story, none of the references I found mentioned the Bible verse Exodus 23:4-5: "When you come upon your enemy's ox or donkey going astray, you shall bring it back..." Washington's two best known horses were Nelson and Blueskin, who served with him during the Revolutionary War and were later retired to Mount Vernon. Of the two, Blueskin was nearly white; but his coat was actually a pale bluish grey. Washington was considered the "best horseman in all of Virginia." Washington is also known as the father of the mule industry in this country. He started with a large jack that was a gift to him from the King of Spain. The jack was known as 'Royal Gift' (not very original!). He sent the jack on a 1000 mile breeding tour of the southern states. He later received another, smaller Maltese jack named 'Knight of Malta', a gift from the Marquis of Lafayette. This jack produced mules more suited to riding. Info taken from The Natural Superiority of Mules by John Hauer. Hope you enjoy this additional trivia! Inset in the center bottom of this picture is a brass plate inscribed with the Bible verse 2nd Chronicles 7:14: "If my people... shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face...then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
