In the 1960's a large number of caches
of brown and black incised beads, or spindle
whorls, were found in digs of the Manabi
culture of The greatest numbers were simply decorated with circles, dots and lines. A far smaller number depicted creatures that flew, ran or crawled, combinations of several of these, or fantasy figures. All were filled with a clay -like substance that accentuated the incised designs. We are offering a selection of these, the finest we've seen and selected from thousands. It is believed that the larger ones were spindle whorls, and the
smaller ones strung as beads. For descriptions, we are attempting to follow information from the two books on the beads. Frederick W. Shaffer - Indian Designs From Ancient Ecuador, 1979, and Dumbarton Oaks- Studies in Pre-Columbian Art and Archeology, #12 , symbolism of miniature art from Ecuador, Johannes Wilbert. 1974 Authenticity is of course guaranteed.
