PRESENT SABERS
A POPULAR HISTORY OF THE U.S. HORSE CAVALRY
by Allan T. Heninger
FIRST EDITION, 2002
****
Present Sabers is an illustrated history of the U.S. horse cavalry, from its earliest beginnings during the Revolutionary War through its demise in World War II. A MUST for anyone wanting to relive the grandeur of America's military past!
This is the story of an elite military organization, the United States Horse Cavalry, and its development and role in the course of American military and social history. It is the narrative of the Cavalry's many victories and defeats, and about the realities and myths that continue to arouse our interest. Finally, it is a story of transition. Time-tested traditions were eventually pushed aside to give way to the developing technology that governs the ultimate outcome of all wars.
Present Sabers takes up with the Cavalry's earliest beginnings during the American Revolution, when Washington's horsemen performed non-combat roles such as scouting, through its maturation into an effective fighting force in the 1800s. Finally, the book ends with World War II, when war embraced the technology of mass annihilation and the horse soldier passed into the annals of military history.
Chapters between cover the War of 1812, the taming of the Western frontier, the Indian wars, the Mexican War, the American Civil War, the Spanish-American War, skirmishes in other countries such as China and the Philippines, the Great War, and more.
