Letter signed by President James A. Garfield datelined Washington D.C., 7 February 1877. Letter sent to Drake DeRay requests copies of a speech and details proceedings of a commission that Garfield participated in "…I received your telegram while sitting on the Commission and immediately telegraphed to give you 500 copies of the 800 that were left…I really think our friends ought to order a lot of them printed but I do not feel at liberty myself to suggest it. When you get back you perhaps can see Edmunds and have something dome about it. We have won the first victory in the commission today, but by a close vote of 8 to 7. I think we will come out all right…" Letter is signed on second page "J.A. Garfield" in bold black ink. Letter measures 7.75" x 9.75" and shows slight toning. Overall excellent condition.
