Primitive FolkArt Black Doll~Orianna~ WSOAPP

I have for you this sweet doll I call Orianna. She is made of muslin and osnaburg and is an impressive 32” tall. She is in fact almost as big as a small toddler.

Orianna is dressed in a beautiful winter/Christmas ensemble. Her dress consists of three coordinating fabrics as I so often do. The bodice is a mustard background with tiny leafy stems, and tiny red dots for accent. I have added a cotton lace trim around the neck. The skirt and sleeves are a holly leaf and berry print on black and at the hem I have given it a ruffle of dark green ticking.

The pinafore is a flea market find. It is very old and may have been a pinafore for a toddler at one time. It has a few imperfections but that is what gives it so much charm. I have not tried to fix any frayed or stained areas on the pinafore. I don’t know if the bodice and hem lace is hand embroidered or not but nun the less it is stunning.

The shoes are also a fantastic find. You can see they are vintage shoes that have been well taken care of and I am sure they have the original shoe strings. I know they are old because at the end of one lace there is a metal piece and I know they haven’t used metal at the ends for ages. The shoes are a moss green in color.

Orianna’s beautiful face is painted. I used acrylic for her big brown eyes and also for her mouth. Shading of colored chalk give her features depth and expression. Her hair is lamb’s wool that has been felted into place and her hat (that fits her to perfection) is hand made by me and gently tacked to her head just to hold it into place.

Orianna has a flat bum that enables her to sit without any assistance and her tiny hands are cupped slightly. She also wears a pair of bloomers made of muslin with cotton lace trim at the hem, and a pair of knit socks.

Orianna brings with her a primitive style bunny that I made of warm and natural, and stained with my special aging mixture to give him that well worn and much loved look. His eyes and mouth are embroidery floss as well as his whiskers, with a piece of homespun around his neck.
