Of all of the Zuni figures that Zuni artists are allowed to portray in their art, the Corn Maiden is perhaps the most important, most revered, and the most popular among collectors. The Zuni Corn Maiden -- sometimes called the Grandmother of the Light and the Grandmother of the Sun -- represents rich multi leveled legends surrounding the distribution and growing of corn. Although this is a Zuni figure, corn was of paramount importance to all farming southwestern pueblo tribes because successful corn crops were literally the difference between life and starvation. Created by the Great Spirit (as represented by the Sunface) in His/Her right hand, each Corn Maiden brings and puts the sun's fire (life) into human bodies and brings one seed corn which will be planted and will sustain the entire tribe forever. Her spirit is always with the people. The double Corn Maidens are representations of the Corn Maiden of the South who distributes red corn. Zuni fetish carver Chad Quandelacy is one of the mega famous Quandelacys who've won awards as long as your arm for their meticulous and always extremely detailed carvings. Chad selected a gorgeous blue green Turquoise Mountain stone with honey golden and caramel brown matrix for this incredibly well detailed size 8 ring that might have become a simple pendant in hands of a lesser artist and then cut it so artistically that it looks as if the two Corn Maidens are slowly emerging from a hand etched and scored ear of corn in the center. The Corn Maidens sre mounted in a sterling silver bezel with a raindrop bead overlaid at the top and bottom of the bezel -- all in all, a simply masterful and quite impressive collector quality fetish creation. The Corn Maidens' bezel measures 1½" by 5/16ths," and the inlay fetish is only a hair's difference smaller. The shank is 3/32nds" wide. Size 8. Chad Quandelacy's engraved signature and tribal affiliation is on the back. Chad's friend Zuni silversmith Valerie Cimozoza did the silver work. Her name is also engraved on the back of the bezel.
