In this scholarly text, the author argues that many Queen Anne, Georgian, and Chippendale furniture pieces formerly attributed to English furniture makers are in fact products of Irish makers. “For years, the author states, antiques dealers have knowingly or unknowingly misrepresented by failing to account for the Irish origin of many of the American collections of furniture begun in the eighteenth century. Mr. Hinckley also traces the Irish influence on furniture produced in the United States, showing how many Irish craftsmen emigrated to America and set up workshops on the eastern seaboard in which they continued the work they had done in Dublin.” In the end, then, the reader acquires skill in discerning genuine Dublin characteristics of fine furniture and the appraiser gains essential information. Finally, credit should be given where credit is due, through our better understanding of the influences of Irish craftsmen on American décor.
