From a recent estate sale comes this whimsical, goose design, milk pitcher by the Robinson-Ransbottom Pottery Company (R.R.P. Co.), Roseville, Ohio. The top half of this unique stoneware pitcher reveals, in the handpainted simplicity of the American Arts & Crafts Movement, a white goose wearing a bright blue bow at its neck. The bottom half of the pitcher is ringed by two cobalt blue painted bands separated by about 1 inch. Centered below the painted goose, between the two bands, is a handpainted title in black, reading: "MaryJo's Jug." The quaintness of this personalizing effect is eye catching and quite humorous.
The base clay color of "MaryJo's Jug" is a definite ecru shade. The pitcher stands 6 1/8 inches tall, on a 3 5/8 inch base, with an ample 3 inch mouth. From spout to handle reaches 6 inches. Imprinted on the base is the maker's mark: "R.R.P. Co., Roseville, O., U.S.A., #303 H." A subtle all-over matte glaze finish enhances the pitcher's hand-painted presentation. The pitcher has a capacity of 4 cups (32 ounces) liquid measure.
Although the R.R.P. Co. maker had been operating since 1900, the peak of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, we can't confirm the original purchase or production dates of this handcrafted piece. Just be confident that this beautifully unique specimen has been lovingly cared for, and will be a worthy addition to any serious R.R.P. Co. collection.
The pitcher is in NEAR MINT condition, with no chips, scratches, crazing, or cracks to mar its high quality stoneware surface. Nevertheless, a few characteristic minor dimples can be seen, close up. Still, the specimen rings true. Please see the photos presented here.
