RAINBOW CAL SILICA ROUGH SLAB CALSILICA

 This item is a slab of rainbow colored stone from Mexico. I have been working with this stone for about 5 years now and I still like it. It cuts and polishes great and does not chip or crack very easily. There is quite a controvery surrounding this stone. No one is quite sure if it is real or a great fake. One expert said it is real and then one of the big gem companies tested it and said it was fake. The company that imports and stabilizes this material had it tested at a couple of different places and they say it is real. I personally don't care it is a wonderful lapidary stone and makes very interesting jewelry. I will let you know if I find out more about this stone. The information I have says this stone is composed of calcite allophane clay. It has been stabilized with the same process used on almost all modern Turquoise.

    This piece measures 32 x 30 mm and is 5 mm thick. I use a bright light to take the auction pictures and most of the rough pieces are wet to better show the colors and patterns. This piece should cut some nice cabochons or maybe just a nice addition to your collection.
