Offered here is an especially rare 1818 1st edition, from Scotland, of The Heart of Mid-Lothian. We cannot find another copy online. This is the first of four volumes. The title page does not mention The Heart of Mid-Lothian, which is by Sir Walter Scott, but that is the way it was published. The title page reads: Tales of My Landlord, Second Series, Collected and Arranged by Jedediah Cleishbotham, Schoolmaster and Parish Clerk of Gandercleugh. In four volumes, this being Volume 1. Published in Edinburgh, Scotland, Printed for Archibald Constable and Company, 1818.
There is a preface with the initials J.C. (Jedediah Cleishbotham, Scott's pseudonym), dated April 1, 1818.
With a fancy bookplate, Francis Day Rogers, with a stag motif, and a penciled inscription noting that this is "the first state, with no half titles." 333 pages, handsomely bound in half leather with brownish cloth boards, a black leather spine label lettered in gilt. 7x4 inches. Very good condition for a book almost 200 years old.
From a huge collection of vintage leather we are now offering, many first editions, including signed books from Thomas Hardy's library. For all we know, this could be one of them, though it is not so marked.
