" Whale Fishery ". Original 18th century etching printed from a copper plate on fine laid rag paper: image/plate size: 11 inches by 7 1/4 inches ( 27.5 x 18.5cm ): framed.

Antique Whaling subjects are rare and 18th century views of whaling are especially scarce. The Middleton Whaling Print is considered by collectors to be one of the rarest of all whaling prints.

This original was etched by Thomas Bowen and printed in 1777 for Middleton's Complete System of Geography. The view accurately depicts the iceberg filled sea with sailing ships and row boats of sailors spearing sperm whales as well as sailors on the icy shore spearing and shooting bears. The engraved text below the image reads - "A View of the Whale Fishery and the Manner of Killing-Bears near & on the Coast of Greenland".
 
NOTE: This work is fully guaranteed to be an 18th century original etching ( not a later printing or reproduction ): the work comes with a credentialed certificate of authenticity.

NOTE: This work is in excellent condition: Whire spots and shapes in my photos are from glass reflections only: original in even toned and clear throughout: a fine deep impression with clear and strong inking contrasts: The work is nicely framed under glass in a fine custom painted wood and textured silver leafed frame with double archival mats: frame size is 13.5 x 17.5 inches ( 34.5 x 44.5cm ): frame is also in excellent condition
