This 1908 $20 Saint Gaudens No Motto gold piece has been graded MS67 by NGC.  Not only is this Saint Gaudens an ultra high-end coin, but it is also a scarce "No Motto" variety specimen.

The condition of this 1908 Saint Gaudens is beyond gem, it's absolutely superb. The bright original mint luster is radiant and the entire coin exhibits an even warm golden rich-straw tinted hue. The fields are fantastically smooth and creamy with such minimal bag marks as the grade would suggest. The devices are sharp, crisp and very well-struck.  They are sharply contrasted and stand out exceptionally against it's velvety smooth fields. 

This is truly one of the sharpest looking Saints I've come across in a long time.

Another very appealling aspect of this fine specimen is the historical significance of it's "No Motto" variety.

The 1908 "No Motto" Double Eagle is occasionally referred to as the "Godless $20" because the phrase"IN GOD WE TRUST" is not present just above the sun on the back of the coin as it is on almost all US currency. President Teddy Roosevelt demanded the motto be taken off the coin.  An otherwise religious man,  he felt strongly that the words violated the Constitutional separation of church and state and that God's name had no business being on money. Due to Congressional and public influence and protest, the motto was restored in the later part of 1908, where it remained until the series ended in 1933. This specimen is a product of the first half of 1908 when the motto was stricken from the design.

 

Numismedia.com currently lists a value for the 1908 Saint Gaudens graded MS67 at: $11,500.00

Because of its history, scarce variety, and superb condition, I believe this Saint Gaudens is worth even more than the listed Numismedia value.
