RARE - AFRICAN- AMERICAN 1930 QUILT - SCOTTSBORO ALA. !

         A very rare African American made quilt , circa 1930. Handsewn in a Mariner's Compass pattern and in beautiful bright colors of Vermillion, Cinnabar, grays, browns and white. Purchased in Scottsboro Alabama many years ago quilt has been in private collection since . Stars are made of dress patterns of the era surrounded by the vermillion & red. In African culture that was carried forth in this country red is the color for fertility and gold yellow good fortune  so quilt was probably meant as a wedding quilt and from the stitching probably made by an elder of the family. This quilt measures 84 x 72" and is in generally very good condition . Made of all cotton quilt is firm and in durable condition with some dress pattern areas of the stars staining the surrounding white areas as the cotton print dresses they were made from were not color fast,do see photos . There are stains near center of quilt on back that appear to be blood stains though I am not sure . This is an extraordinary quilt and new to the market and overall in very good condition , very rare to see such a statement of culture I would say this quilt is indeed important historically and  museum worthy .
