RARE, Bamana Equestrian figure, Horse and Rider –
NR
Exquisite detail,
exceptional pose, Bambara,
This is a very powerful example of a Bamana (formerly called
Bambara) equestrian figure. These figures are typically depicted in a static or
stationary pose – this one is exceptionally rare because it depicts the horse
in motion. I have never seen one like it on eBay or anywhere else (but I am really running out of room
- trying to keep it to 100 masks and figures). In addition,
the overall carving is detailed and beautiful (and the face of the horse is
unbelievably appealing).
In the Bamana culture the equestrian figures reflect the
prestige and power surrounding an animal that has been associated with royalty
since horses were introduced to West Africa more
than a thousand years ago. The size of the rider (large in comparison to the horse)
is intentional and reflects the importance of the rider. The beard of this
rider also indicates an elder of importance.
The artistic diversity of the Bamana is without doubt one of
the most astounding, and confounding, of all West African groups. It is
interesting that perhaps their closest rivals in complexity are their neighbors
to the north and east, the Dogon, with whom they share certain stylistic
similarities. Complex religious, funerary, initiation, and agricultural rites
have resulted in an enormous pantheon of ritual objects.
As for provenance, unfortunately, I have no information. I
purchased this from someone who in turn had purchased it from an estate sale
containing many African artifacts. I have no information about how or when the
piece was collected. I trust my eyes this is an exceptional carving as you can see from the photos.
The last photo is of two Bamana chi waras that I am selling.
Their auction ends before this auction (just three days from now).I have really come to love all three of these figures and hope they find homes where they will be prominently displayed, as they deserve. I don't believe you will find a more beautifully carved Bamina equestrian figure at any price.
