I am offering a beautiful RARE stoneware milk or batter crock that was found in Virginia. The cobalt blue decoration is very elaborate and bold and encircles the crock. The wide rim and spout are in beautiful condition and there is a decorative incised line about 1" below the rim, also going around the crock. It is stamped numeral 1 in a circle near the spout, showing it to be one gallon capacity. It also has an interesting "pulled" pouring spout to assist pouring cream off of the milk. It measures 5" high x 11" wide (at the top) and 8" wide (at the bottom). It is made from a very red clay and the interior is dark brown "Albany" slip glazed. The condition is solid and excellent, with the exception of one small old rim chip on the back and a small glaze chip on the inside, both about 1/4". There are also a number of tiny clay or glaze bursts from the original firing. (see photos) Other than that, it is a very RARE and unusual piece of early AMERICAN STONEWARE! Please email me any questions before bidding. I will take care of handling and insurance, you pay shipping. Good luck and thanks for looking! |
