Rare Bobby Jones
1930's Fairway Woods
Near Immaculate Condition
History and provenance:
This item is a consignent from an elderly gentleman who was a prominent amateur, as a Club Champion and a participant in several important regional events, in the 1940's through the early 1960's in the New York / New Jersey area.
The consignor purchased this set of woods a few decades ago from the widow of an elderly fellow club member. He at first intended to use these beautifully crafted left handed clubs ( as he golfed left handed himself ), but was so impressed by their state of preservation, especially given their older vintage, that he never used or even swung them for fear of ruining their near pristine condition.
Description:
The clubs are a special set of Bobby Jones autograph models manufactured by Spalding in the 1930's to Jones' specifications. Included are a 1, 2, and 3 wood. The number 2 wood was also known as a brassie and was a popular club in the 1930's to 1940's.
As an historical note, Spalding signed on Mr. Robert Tyre Jones in 1931 and, because of this golfer's tremendous popularity, he almost single handedly saved Spalding's golf business after the downturn at the beginning of the Great Depression.
These clubs include the completely fresh leather Jones Form Grip of Jones' own design and patent. This Jones patented design has deep holes or dimples right through the leather as well as a flaring of the grip at the butt end. Large numerals identifying each club are at the butt end.
The matching shafts are stepped steel with a long unstepped segment at the bottom. The shaft is screwed ( not just glued ) in at the sole. Percussion weighted metal base plate and a seperate rear sole weight.
Each club has the matching serial number of 133 engraved on the sole and the signature, Robert T. Jones, engraved on the topside.
The design, color, quality of construction and overall aesthetic appeal just ooze in every way the essence of the classic Jones.
The clubs are essentially as issued with perhaps the lightest and slightest trace of some absolute minimal usage on careful close-up exam. Considerable, if not almost complete, gloss on wood. Some very light minimal oxidation of the surface of the shafts in spots. I have not attempted to remove this superficial metal oxidaton in order to keep everything original. Included as well are the small cotton golf club "socks" which have covered these club heads and protected them for decades.
In short, an incredible condition matched set of antique vintage clubs.......Bobby Jones' personal 1930's autograph model.
For the finest collection.
