This is what it is - an extremely rare "Dancing Jigger" attached at the end of a flexible rod accompanied by the original paddle and platform (that in and of itself is quite amazing in its design and beautiful blue paint with a patent date of December 1, 1863 - right in the middle of the Civil War). The vibrating paddle was patented by T. N. and J. N. Crow as an "automatic dancer" and the patent number is 40,740. I have included a picture of the patent diagram and the second explanation page, but you can go to the original web page by going to: www.uspto.gov/patft/ and inserting the patent number. Of course, the depiction on the patent application is simplified, but there is no doubt that the Crow brothers had in mind marketing a "Negro" dancing figure since they refer to it several times in the application. They were from Mott Haven, Westchester County, New York. I am no expert on toys, but extensive research has failed to find a similar example in a toy book, with the exception of the on-line toy book that features this exact item. I am aware of the early 20th c. dancing jiggers, usually key wound, but the date on this example has to be extremely rare and desirable by the collector of toys, 19th c. toys and Black Americana. The condition is remarkable - original paint on the figure, and the gorgeous original blue paint with stenciling on the base. The figure seems to be wearing some sort of uniform. His hat's several missing pieces seem to be the only real defect, but considering the use and age, the condition is truly remarkable. The face of the figure appears to be molded and applied to the wood backing. He is about 8 3/4" high and the platform is about 16 1/2" long. Everything about the toy is so remarkable, it elevates it to a high level of folk art. It would not be difficult to make a support for holding the figure up on the paddle, if desired, but it displays well as is. Finally, this toy was in an old collection, not hitherto available for sale. Buyer pays shipping and insurance of $15.00 within the USA. Satisfaction or I'll make it right!
