As one of Notrth America's first joint Deputy Postmasters General, Benjamin Franklin laid the foundation of an efficient postal system for what would become Canada and the United States.
With the signing of the Treaty Of Paris in 1763, Franklin's postal responsabilities extended to Britain's newly acquired colony of New France. He succeeded in establishing a mail route from Montreal to New York, where packets set sail for Europe 12 months of the year, while the St-Lawrence was closed to navigation through the long winter.
