1883 Franz Schwarzer Zither 31 string.

This Zither is in excelent shape.

Some of the trim has separated and there is a slight weather cracks in it.

It has the Mother of Pearl inlay and (real) ivory legs, that was Franzs' signature.

It is missing 5 strings. It is in the original case and has the monogram of A.G. on the handle. * Found an old newspaper article where Franz was on a cruise ship with a Mrs. A. G. Parker who was a music teacher. Perhaps this is one he made for her, thus why it has no serial number

It has the tunning hammer and 2 picks.

While researching this zither I could not find a 31 string. The museum I contacted in Missouri did not know of one. Making this zither a very unique piece.

Franz Schwarzer – Missouri's Zither King

Over 10,000 concert zithers were made in Washington, Missouri by Austrian immigrant Franz Schwarzer, beginning in l866. Schwarzer’s zithers competed favorably with those of European makers and were sold all over the world.  In l873, Schwarzer entered three of his zithers in the Vienna Exposition and was awarded the “Gold Medal of Progress”, the highest award of the fair, for his entry. Schwarzer died in 1904. The Washington Historical Society maintains an exhibit of a dozen Schwarzer zithers and other instruments from his factory at its museum at Fourth and Market Sts. in Washington, Missouri.
