  of a Photo-Mechanical (Offset Print) foundation upon which Saito has laid individual woodcut designs. Always an innovator of Sosaku - Hanga, Saito employed this creative pairing of machine and woodcut printing to achieve incredible depth and intrigue in this extraordinary work of art. The offset printing provides the ultimate in highly detailed textural effects, which are overlaid with layers of subtly contrasting rich ink. (Saito often made numerous impressions of colors to give his work the deepest tones, with tremendous depth.) This unusual approach creates a harmony of hues and textures, as well as an integration of the underlying aesthetics and unique ensemble of artist-selected colors. The multi-planer overlay of woodblock print elements, spectacularly splendid serene saturation incorporating selected tones and the specific spiritual nature of the piece are magnificent.

What an amazing find! Carefully stored away since this was purchased in the 196Os in Japan, this exceedingly special image on a folding card is truly outstanding. It would look so fantastic displayed alone or in a small or large grouping.

On a recent episode of Antiques Roadshow, in Cleveland, 2 Saito prints were featured and appraised. Highly collectible, with unique Cubist, Modern and Abstract elements, his prints are worth many hundreds of dollars, and more. This print is also very rare.

~ In 300 AD to 500 AD ~

These figures were created to set outside ancient tombs of clan leaders. Known for their enchanting simplicity, many were made quickly, when an important person died, to adorn the tomb for the burial ceremony. Haniwa figures were attendants to the deceased, functioned as guardians of the tomb and were symbols of status. They faced outward and lined the contours of the burial mound plus the entrance to the tomb. This Saito print illustrates Haniwa with faces, perhaps like ones used at Chausuyama.

The radiant, rich colors and fascinating textural characteristics are exceptionally beautiful and vibrant.
