This is the hard to find original edition of one of only two books devoted exclusively to the subject. It is a first edition published in 1979 by the Smithsonian Institute as part of their Studies in History and Technology series. It is in soft cover format and contains 103 pages.
This exceptional reference thoroughly explores the history and details of this bizarre medical practice which was widely accepted and used well into the 20th century (and still is in limited use today.) It is profusely illustrated with photos and engravings from many different, obscure sources. The illustrations in this original copy are of noticeably better quality than those in the reprint versions.
The first and only press run in 1979 was limited because of its then niche potential audience. Consequently the demand for an original copy far exceeds the supply. It is an unequaled reference for the medical collector or historian as well as a rapidly appreciating collectible itself.
This copy is in very good+ condition. The covers show some shelf wear and sunning. The remainder could be considered in fine condition witth bright un marked pages. Original copies like this are extremely hard to find in any condition.
