STRAWBOOT or SNOWSHOE

Very Rare and Valuable

TWO VERY EARLY JAPANESE WOODBLOCK PRINTS

by

KIYOSHI SAITO

SNOWSHOE Woodcut Print on Front of Card

and, amazingly, the

Card opens to reveal another Incredible Woodcut Print of an Enchanting Winter Scene with Skis

Highly Intricate Delightful Scene

CHOP SIGNED

This genuine vintage woodcut print contains Kiyoshi Saito's personal signature in the form of a "chop" mark.  In the lower righthand corner you can see a red square with calligraphy, which is Kiyoshi Saito's personal chop mark.

A chop is a traditional centurys' old method of signature in Japan and China, and the chop is skillfully handcarved from wood, horn or stone (an art in itself) - which is also known as a hanko.  Ink is applied to the carved signature on the chop face, which is then pressed onto the paper.

What a beautiful vignette! Six sweet snowsuit clad children (accompanied by a vibrantly caped adult), frolic in the snow near a vendor selling produce.  See their wonderful strawboots!  Heavy snow hangs from the roofs and bare winter branches can be seen behind the building.  What a glorious winter scene!

Colors are extraordinarily brilliant and joyous

PLEASE READ:

Saito's large prints sell for high amounts of money (normally over $15OO each).  Always a proponent of a classless society, Kiyoshi Saito created art for everyone.  The beautiful small prints I offer were made to allow more people to enjoy his work.  These real prints are no less authentic nor magnificent than his larger prints, and provide affordable alternatives for the discriminating art lover.  I have a limited number of these incredible works of art, and have never seen them offered anywhere else, so this is a special offering and rare opportunity for you to acquire and own real Saito prints.

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE TO GET A SUPERB KIYOSHI SAITO TREASURE

WHAT AN AMAZING FIND!

Purchased directly from Saito in Japan, offered today is this very special KIYOSHI SAITO (1907-1997) print

On an episode of Antiques Roadshow, in Cleveland, 2 Saito prints were featured and appraised. Highly collectible, with unique Cubist, Modern and Abstract elements, his prints are worth many hundreds of dollars, and more. This woodblock print is an excellent example of Saito's amazing work.

What an incredibly rare find! Carefully stored away for many, many decades, this original, old stock, woodblock print, by Kiyoshi Saito, on a folding card, is extraordinarily beautiful. It is not a reproduction.

There is no reserve on this hand~crafted, gallery~quality, Japanese print, or greeting card, by the late Master Japanese woodblock artist KIYOSHI SAITO. A gorgeous, highly detailed depiction of a snow scene is so enchanting. Please see photos to examine the lovely, expressive children, of various ages, enjoying themselves on a snowy day. You can almost feel the great fun they are having in the chilly air. The brilliant blue, sunshine gold, pulsating persimmon, resonating red and black colors are exceptionally striking. This elegant work of art, with its sweetly contrasting forms and colors, is a sensual delight!

Saito often made numerous impressions of colors to give his work the deepest tones, with tremendous depth. He creates a harmony of hues and textures, as well as an integration of the underlying aesthetics and unique ensemble of artist-selected colors. Spectacularly splendid serene saturation incorporating selected tones and the specific spirited nature of the piece are magnificent.

I am not sure of the date this woodblock print was carved, but it was probably created in the late 193Os or 194Os

Every color of this print represents a separate woodblock, skillfully designed, drawn and carved with special tools by Master Artist Saito approximately 5O years ago. After painstaking carving, the blocks are hand inked (with a brayer), paper is placed over the prepared block and the ink is transferred from the raised surfaces of the wood to the paper by rubbing methods. Execution of each step takes tremendous skill and patience. This is the oldest technique of making prints and this is a truly fantastic, real woodblock print of superb quality.

It would look marvelous in any venue, displayed with other similar items, or simply displayed alone. What a wonderful gift this would be for any print collector or lover of Japanese art!

It is in excellent condition. This print pair has tremendous character and grace.  Sale is final.

Kiyoshi Saito's incredibly beautiful prints are displayed in a museum dedicated to him alone - the Yanaizu Municipal Saito Kiyoshi Museum (in Japan), and in the following: Cincinnati Art Museum, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts, San Francisco, New York Public Library, Art Institute of Chicago, Fukushima Prefectural Museum of Art and Kanagawa Prefectural Museum. A world-renowned, incredibly talented, wood block print artist, in 1948 his work was exhibited at the Salon Printemps, and in 1951 he received first prize for Steady Gaze at the inaugural Sao Paolo Bienniale.
