  Amber is fossil tree resin, which is valued for its color and beauty. Good quality amber is used for the manufacture of ornamental objects and jewelry. A common misunderstanding is that amber is made of tree sap and it is not. Sap is the fluid that circulates through a plant’s vascular system, while resin is the semi-solid amorphous organic substance secreted in pockets and canals through epithelial cells of the plant.

This amber is from the Pilocene Era and was found in Sambava - North East of Madagascar. It is estimated to be 3 million years old. Because it used to be soft and sticky tree resin, amber can sometimes contain insects and even small vertebrates. Amber occurs in many different colors. The most common color is the yellow-orange, while it can range from a whitish color through a pale lemon yellow, to brown and almost black. Other uncommon colors include red or “cherry amber”, green, and the rare, highly sought after blue amber. Most of amber is transparent, but cloudy amber and opaque amber is also common. The most valuable amber is light-colored to clear.

This auction is for a museum piece of genuine amber with a very large spider, beetle and several variety of other insects. I never seen one like it with it amazing quality. You can even see the hairs on the spider's legs. Truly a spectacular fossil find. It is not the reconstituded or modern made pieces you will find so many of, but an actual authentic specimen.  It measures 86.59 mm x 22.32 mm x 14.67 mm or 3.41 inches x 0.88 inches x 0.58 inches and weighs 0.55 ounces. It also comes in a 5.5 inch x 4.5 inch display frame.
