What a thrill to find this late 1940s ceramic cookie jar in an estate. The elusive "Uncle Mistletoe", a legendary Marshall Fields Christmas character, who, along with his wife Aunt Holly, was the source of many memories for Chicago-area families at mid-century. This ceramic cookie jar, made by Peter Pan Product, Inc. of Chicago, is just over 12" high. It was a cold-painted piece, and as you can see, the color is coming off at several points and yet has more original color surviving on it than many of the cold-painted cookie jars of the era do. Two issue to note: the mouth of the jar appears to have a chip out of it, and yet to my touch, that area is smooth so I'm not sure if it's damage, or a manufacturing flaw. There is also a "Y" shaped crack in the bottom that also looks like a flaw (cracked clay), but I'm not sure. Both issues are totally hidden when on display. It could use some cleaning, but obviously cleaning a cold-painted piece takes an extremely gentle touch and a lot of patience ... I have neither so it'll be shipped exactly as we found it and leave any work to you. What a spectacular find. These pop up so rarely on the secondary market that it's a privilege just to have it here in the house until it is sent to its new home. If you collect vintage Uncle Mistletoe, or vintage Marshall Fields, or vintage Christmas, or vintage cookie jars, you can NOT let this one get away! Offered absolutely as-found, final sale with no returns or refunds considered.
