RARE! WELLS FARGO EXPRESS WAX SEAL CIRCA 1870-1915

Description:

RARE! Early Wells Fargo Express wax seal, circa 1870 to 1915. These wax seals were used by the Agent to seal a package after it was inspected. If the item was damaged, Wells Fargo would take the loss. This seal is from Hyak, Washington, which is South East of Bellvue, WA., at 2,556' elevation. The town's name derives from the Chinook Indian vocabulary, meaning "hurry". The face of the seal is indented (stamped) with the words "Wells Fargo & Co", "Express", and HYAK, WASH." Identical wax seals are shown in the Old West Antiques & Collectibles book from 1981, page 129. Construction is one piece solid brass, with a hollow handle. About 2 1/2" tall, and the round seal is about 1 1/8" in diameter x 5/16" thick. Weight is about 4.7 ounces. At a recent high end Old West show, I saw an early Wells Fargo wax seal from a historical Wyoming Territory wild west city for sale for $3,800.
