| | Album notes | Personnel: Dizzee Rascal (rap vocals); Marga Man (rap vocals); Vanya (background vocals). On his sophomore release, 19-year-old British MC Dizzee Rascal proves that his Mercury Music Prize-winning debut, BOY IN DA CORNER, was no fluke. If anything, success only appears to have made Dizzee even more ferocious and determined. For the uninitiated, SHOWTIME will come as a shock. With hyperactive, aggressive lyrics and assaulting, off-kilter tunes, SHOWTIME sounds like a time-capsule sent from the distant future. The title track starts things off, as Dizzee recalls the days before he was a superstar. Although the album's 15 tracks cover a variety of tempos and moods--the club-banging "Stand Up Tall," the Asian-influenced "Learn," the slow and murky "Graftin'"--one thing remains constant: the dizzying vocal delivery of Dizzee himself. Whether he's poking fun at his own stardom ("Face"), discussing the female of the species ("Girls"), or reminiscing about adolescence ("Dream"), he never slows down to catch his breath. Much like Eminem, Dizzee Rascal writes from a deeply personal place. It is this honest approach that makes SHOWTIME such a vital listening experience.
