___________________________________________________________________________________________________ This stuff is the real deal. I've been playing it for weeks on end and I just can't stop, because the more I listen, the stronger it gets. I think this is one of those bands that I'll be able to say I knew about long before the rest of the world catches up. Comparisons are always lame -- writing about music is like dancing about architecture, right? -- so Regular sometimes gets tagged as "emo." Songs like "Talk Me Down" can sound a little like Jimmy Eat World -- if Bowie produced them during the "Hunky Dory" sessions, anyway -- but it's much richer than that kid stuff. The Elvis Costello influence is undeniable. And I'd even put John Kieltyka's songwriting on this first effort up against any of the big guns, like Neil Young, Steve Earle, PJ Harvey -- any of 'em. The strength of this guy's talent is particularly evident on tracks like "Tyrone," "Sin of Pride," "Parade," and "Huffer." As a matter of fact, it's worth getting the CD for "Huffer" alone. It's terrifying, it's beautiful -- it's hands-down the best song I've heard this year. But I don't want to wreck anybody's experience of hearing "Huffer" for the first time by giving anything away (!!) so I'll try to describe "Tyrone" -- a song about kids and race relations without the soapbox -- to give you a taste of what you can expect. From the Hammond opening to the sidewinder slide-work, the guitar punctuation that jumps right into your lap and the fretless bass, it's pure magic. The tight performances somehow allow it to sound airy and just this side of lo-fi but it's still got a hot, solid groove. The songcraft has a pop sensibility and it's played by musicians who can make all sorts of sneaky references from Stax-Volt to Lou Reed. Like I said, this is the real deal -- a desert-island-disc -- and not to be missed. ________________________________________________________ It's hard to know what to make of Regular's self-titled debut album, even if it seems that might have been the intention of singer/songwriter John F. Kieltyka, who wrote and sang everything here, even if he didn't bill the final result to himself. Musically, Regular has fairly accessible, if somewhat quirky and twisting, alternative indie rock melodies and arrangements, backing Kieltyka's slightly strained but reasonably accomplished and expressive vocals. Lyrically, however, it's hardly any more straightforward than a Jandek record, with frequent strings of unrelated non-sequiturs (though they're sung as if they actually make a good deal of sense). What to make of lines like "who knew the general in his prime was walking with a clubbed foot?" or "Wally is out of touch, keeps seeing himself in autographed pictures of Abraham Lincoln in women's lingerie"? Neither of which, mind you, is especially related to the other words in the songs in which they appear. What does seep through, if only in the manner of a hallway light penetrating cracks of a closed door, is a sense of dislocated unhappiness, loneliness, and social marginalization, though the music isn't anywhere as downbeat as that might suggest. In fact, there are a fair amount of wistful melodies and unexpected tempo changes and decorative instrumental touches, albeit in a somewhat generic indie rock fashion. More coherence in these kind of endeavors isn't always necessarily a bad thing, though. _______________________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________ Regular is pretty much the project of singer/songwriter John F. Kieltyka, who wrote and sang all of the material on the band's self-titled 2003 debut, which also had non-vocal contributions from four other musicians. Regular is an oddity in that fairly conventional alternative rock melodies and singing are combined with inscrutable free-associative lyrics that haven't much of a chance at sticking with more pop-oriented listeners.
