Researches on the Effects of Bloodletting in Some Inflamatory Diseases Together With Researches on Phthisis
Pierre Charles Alexandre Louis (1787-1872), the French clinician and pathologist, was noted for, among other things, the introduction of the 'numerical method' for evaluating the effects of therapy, the forerunner of the modern drug trial.
Garrison-Morton 1698 (citing 1st French ed., 1835). "By publishing statistical evidence against the common practice of bloodletting in the treatment of pneumonia, Louis let loose a flood of controversy. Nevertheless, his attack marked the beginning of the decline of this time-honored, often lethal, procedure" (Heirs of Hippocrates 1441). "His introduction of the statistical method into clinical medicine, by which he was able inter alia to demolish Broussais" system, was of prime importance to the progress of medicine" (Castiglioni, History of Medicine, p. 702)

This copy also includes a 15 page booklet with the same title containing "Notes From The Editors" which was issued with the book. It is most often no longer with the book and in fact can be found offered separately. Also included is the two page letter from the publisher anouncing the release of this new edition the series.
