RESISTOL "WIDE COUNTRY" STETSON OPEN ROAD 7¼ NEAR MINT
1960s (?), SILVER BELLY, CATTLEMAN'S CREASE, LAPEL CORD
Resistol 'Wide Country' hat in silver belly felt, size 7 1/4 extra long oval. This style appears to be Resistol's version of the famous Stetson 'Open Road'. It has the distinctive cattleman's crease and the silver belly color -- a pale cream/gray.
When I was growing up in Kansas in the '60s and '70s, Resistol was considered a good hat, second only in quality to Stetson. It turns out the two companies may have been allied in various ways over the years, perhaps even being made in the same factory. Today the two companies share and outlet store in Texas apparently.
The hat has the lapel cord, with grosgrain-covered button, designed to be inserted in your lapel buttonhole to prevent the hat from blowing away. This is found mostly on older hats, mostly on fedoras for city dwellers. Other Wide Country models I've seen have not had the lapel cord. Because of this feature, and the trademark on the liner, I think this is an older hat, from the '50s or '60s. One poster on the Fedora Lounge board says that the "a Byer Rolnick Product" line at the bottom of the inside label was dropped in 1968. If this is correct, this hat would date to before that time. But as I say, I think it's probably a bit earlier.
The condition is amazingly good. I see no staining, no pitting, no darkening, no wear anywhere. The grosgrain around the brim shows no wear or staining, which is very unusual for such a light color. The satin lining is perfect. I would call it near mint.
Will be shipped in the USPS's 12x12x9 Priority Mail box.
