~ EXTREMELY RARE REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD POWDER HORN WITH NAME, LOCATION AND DATED 1781 ~

~ BUY IT NOW/BEST OFFER/FREE SHIPPING ~

This listing is for a rare and historic guaranteed genuine Revolutionary War period scrimshawed powder horn. It is all original and rich with provenance including the owner's name, location and date along with abundant period scrimshaw decorations. After consulting Jim Dresslar's powder horn bible, "THE ENGRAVED POWDER HORN", I can say with all certainty that this horn is an original period piece. This horn has everything the discriminating collector of antique military scrimshawed powder horns looks for in a superior piece. This is about as fine as it gets!

There are all kinds of interesting scrimshawed figures and decorations including both animal & human on this incredible powder horn. The abundant scrimshaw is original and faded with age, but is still completely legible. The owner's name is at the pour spout under the fort with flag. It reads "I. Wallace" and is bordered by a scrimshawed "X" decorated border or shield. The horn is dated 1781 and "Hooksett N. H" with the same "X" decorated border or shield, all done in the same scrimshaw style.
It is also scrimshawed "N. Head", possibly a second early settlement or secret meeting place or the scene of a battle. There are also two ducks, a horse, a small rabbit with a scrimshawed "Rabit" underneath it. Beside that is engraved 4000 and pounds with a crude anchor between the two words. Above the pounds word is some sort of long-figured animal that most closely resembles some sort of dog like an English Whippet or similar dog. Also the figure of a man shooting a rifle at a treed animal with a dog beneath the tree and another horse beside the tree! There are also two other names that appear to read "Tom & Joey", probably fellow friends and soldiers of the horn's owner I. Wallace. There is also two fish, what looks like a teepee and a canteen or primitive bomb of some sort. I think it's most likely a canteen. Lastly, the butt end has scrimshawed half circles encircling the end of the horn. The cherrywood butt appears to be attached to the horn with either tiny wood or horn pegs, something I've never seen before and adding further confirmation that this is a genuine period powder horn. The piece also retains part of it's original string around the neck and the original hand carved wooden stopper in excellent condition.

Dimensions & Condition: Excellent given it's extreme age of over 225 years old. Try to imagine what this ancient war relic has been through! If only it could talk. Overall length is 9" including the original crudely carved wood stopper. The hand carved rounded cherrywood end is excellent and measures 2 3/8" wide. There is a very tiny 3mm x 1.5mm age wear hole on the side near the butt end. It has fine surface cracks around it, so I'm sure it's not a worm hole. There is a 1/2" x 3/8" worn spot at the lower ridge of the pouring end on the surface only. The horn is untouched with the most extraordinary golden aged patina.

This is a superior and extremely rare genuine Revolutionary War period powder horn with all the provenance one could hope for on the finest antique scrimshawed powder horns. The only one of it's kind in existence and in extremely well-preserved condition given it's extreme age. It lacks nothing and actually belongs in a museum. I consider this piece priceless. What a magnificent addition to a high end antique militaria collection! Offered in a very low Buy It Now/Best Offer listing with
all serious offers entertained.

Shipping is free, but insurance coverage is required on this item and will be charged at my actual cost determined by the final selling price. Please wait for invoice BEFORE paying.

Thank you!
