Revolutionary War Ghosts in Augusta?

RICHMOND COUNTY, GEORGIA

NEW 66 Page Booklet

Early days in Richmond County, GA, which encompasses the city of Augusta, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this reprinted from two rare books: the Rev. George White's Historical Collections of Georgia and Georgia, a Guide to Its Towns and Countryside, a WPA publication. The new 66-page spiral-bound booklet is printed one-sided on 60# paper with the print enlarged for easier reading.A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the three-color cover.

The excerpt from White's book covers the development of this area until the publication date of 1854, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glympse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities.

Among the many and diverse topics in the booklet are: the Yazoo Freshet of 1840; Early Churches of Augusta; 1850 Census extracts; Longevity, including a woman who supposedly lived to age 140; Petition seeking help against Indian Uprisings, signed by 18 early settlers in 1756; Documents professing loyalty to the King in 1774, with many signatures; Augusta in the Revolution and the Cruelties of Col. Brown; Radification of the Constitution with signatures; Revolutionary War Memos between General Pickens and Colonel Lee for the Americans and Colonel Browne for England, concerning prisoners and surrender;  a Visit from General George Washington; Distinguished men -- Col. Samuel Hammond, Augustus Christian George Elholm; General Thomas Glascock, Charles J. Jenkins,  and other interesting bits of history and trivia.

In the WPA section is a small 1950s map of Augusta; points of interest including -- Signers' Monument, the Richmond Board of Health Building, the De L'Aigle House, Magnolia Cemetery and the Upright Cannon; Dr. E. E. Murphey (Murphy) home, the Nicholas Ware Mansion, the Old Medical College Building, the First Presbyterian Church, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, City Hall, Poets' Monument, the Allen House, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Confederate Monument, Springfield Bapist Church, Meadow Garden, the Medical College of Georgia, the Augusta Canal, the oldest house in Augusta (complete with 13 ghosts of Revolutionary War soldiers), the Academy of Richmond County and Junior College of Augusta, the Walton House, the Kilpatrick House, Montrose, the Montgomery Place, the U.S. Arsenal, Paine College, the Farmers Market, the Augusta National Golf Course (long before Tiger was born), Camp Gordon, and more;  Augusta as "the Industrial Giant on the Savannah"; Importance of Eli Whitney's Cotton Gin; the shifting loyalties in the 1770s; Fort Augusta (alias Fort Cornwallis); William Longstreet's steamboat; Transportation strides; Prosper Julius Berckmans, horticulturist; Augusta in the War Between the States; and much more.
