After building a solo career gradually for a decade, Palmer found himself reaping the benefits. Though Palmer had just achieved success with RIPTIDE producer Bernard Edwards, he opted to produce the follow-up to that platinum-selling record, HEAVY NOVA, himself. Some songs are emphatically in the vein of Palmer's '80s solo work with Power Station, but there's an adult pop sensibility here also, that's more VH1 than MTV. He sings his first torch song (the touching "It Could Happen to You"), yodels on the Wimoweh-esque "Change His Ways," and shows he can still get real laid-back on the country-flavored "Disturbing Behavior." Nevertheless, stomping drums, plucked bass, and synth textures dominate on such funky tracks as "Tell Me I'm Not Dreaming" and "Simply Irresistible." The single "She Makes My Day" sold well, and "Simply Irresistible" did even better.
