| | Details | | Contributing artists: | Nuno Bettencourt | | Producer: | Robert Palmer | | Distributor: | EMI Music Distribution | | Recording type: | Studio | | Recording mode: | Stereo | | SPAR Code: | n/a |
| | Album notes | Personnel: Robert Palmer, Sharon O'Neill (vocals); Saverio Porciello, Gary Butcher, Nuno Bettencourt (guitar); Alan Mansfield (soprano saxophone, keyboards); Demo Morselli (trumpet, flugelhorn); Frank Blair (bass); Mauro Spina, Andy Duncan (drums, percussion); Dony Wynn (drums); Jose Rossy (percussion). Recorded at Logic Studios, Milan, Italy. All songs written or co-written by Robert Palmer except "Girl U Want" (Mark Mothersbaugh/G. Casale). Robert Palmer was instrumental in forging an alliance between rock, R&B, reggae and African music well before it became fashionable in the hands of David Byrne, Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel. But as the joyous, African beats of "Honey A" and "Honey B" make clear, Robert Palmer's vision of a modern, multi-ethnic dance music continues to evolve along defiantly personal lines. Not that Robert Palmer goes out of his way to avoid the passionate thrash funk that cemented his superstar status following his days with The Power Station. On "Big Trouble," "Closer To The Edge," "Girl U Want" and "Wham Bam Boogie," some over-the-top guitar work by Nuno Bettencourt inundates Palmer's big beat dance music in a gush of tasty grunge. But the flavor of ethnic dance musics is implicit in much of Palmer's material, from the dreamy, tropical flavored "Know By Now," to the bossa nova inflections of "Honeymoon." Elsewhere, the punchy horn samples and shimmering rhythm guitars of "You're Mine" evoke James Brown, even as the driving "Nobody But U" suggests Power Station-type funk with heavy rock overtones--in the classic mode of "Addicted To Love"--while power ballads such as "U Blow Me Away" and the mysterious "Close To The Edge" provide a telling contrast.
