Roderic O'Connor (Irish, 1908 - 2001) "Seated Female Nude" oil on canvas, signed and inscribed verso, offered without reserve.
This is a wonderful and fantastically competent nude by this well known and well listed Irish artist. Roderic O'Connor was a Dublin-based artist who exhibited many portraits at the RHA and the Paris Salon throughout his lifetime. He was the son of sculptor Andrew O'Connor (1941-1974). His brother was Patrick O'Connor, another well-known Dublin portrait painter. The painting is signed verso with an inscription which reads:
Roderick O'Connor Seated nude 1952
For Patrick 180 Bleecker St. Greenwich Village
I wonder if "Patrick" refers to his brother - although the address is in Manhattan! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bleecker_Street). I guess we will never know.
The painting is in excellent condition other than being a little dirty. It is a very good size measuring 76 x 51cm. Under black-light there is no evidence of repairs or overpaint. His work rarely comes up in auction - interestingly the last two sold in auction were both of an almost identical subject and style to the painting on offer here. Although these two O'Connor nudes sold back in 2005, they fetched huge money. Details are below:

All items sent overseas are sent "International Signed For" but compensation for loss / damage is limited to the maximum offered by the Post Office. Terms and conditions - please read. I am an art enthusiast but it is not my profession. For reasons of clarity therefore, I follow standard auction descriptions as used by auction houses all over the world as follows:
"The artist name" In my opinion a work by the artist.
"Attributed to..." In my opinion probably a work by the artist.
"Studio of..." In my opinion, a work executed in the artists studio, under his supervision.
"Circle of..." In my opinion a work of the period of the artist and showing his influence.
"Follower of..." In my opinion a work executed in the artists style but not necessarily a pupil.
"Manner of..." In my opinion a work executed in the artist's style but of a later date.
"After..." In my opinion a copy of a work by the artist from a later date.
"Signed" In my opinion the work has been signed / dated / inscribed by the artist.
"Bears Signature / date /inscription" In my opinion the signature / date / inscription is by a hand other than the artist.
