RUSSIA GEORGI SVIRIDOV: TRIPTYCH, WOODEN RUSSIA, THE SOUL'S LAMENTATION, OF THE HEAVENS SNOW FALLS, LP Georgy Vasilyevich Sviridov (1915-1998) made an important contribution to modern Russian musi. His name was made famous by his "Poem to the Memory of Sergei Yesenin". "Oratorio Pathetique" to the words by Mayakovsky. "Kursk Songs" and vocal cycles to the words of A. Isaakian and Robert Burns, "My Father is a Peasant" to Yesenin's words and "Petersburg songs" to the words by A.Block. In the titules and sixties Sviridov created predominantly vocal compoositions of diferent geners, from poetic lyrical miniatures to vast choral works and grandiose oratorios. He wrote music to the words of such great poets as Pushkin, Block, Yesenin, Mayakovsky, Shakespeare and Burns and made use of Russian folk songs. In his mature period Sviridov arrived at a noble simplicaty, terseness and capaciousness of expressive means and at a fresh treatment of the Russian national style. "Triptych" (a small symphony,1966) stands apart among the works produced in the sixties, for it represents the composer's return to instrumental music after an interval of many years. The music of the "Triptych" is clear and transparent and is distinguished by that unassuming and profound beauty which is the main attraction of a pensive Russian song, the reposeful Russian landscape and severe architecture of the ancient buildings. "Wooden Russia", a cantata for a tenor, male choir and symphony orchestra to the words by Sergei Yesenin, was first performed on February1946. Central in the cantata is a lyrical image pf peasant youth who composes songs to his native land, an image which is associated sith the person of the poet Sergi Yesenin. The main theme of the work is a young poet's search for his own. Ahead he glimpses a difficult journey full pf deadly hazards, nut he is full of ardour and confident of his vocation. Two Chourses to Sergei Yesenin's Words were composed in 1967. "Sing me that song which my old mother used to sing ..." are the key words of the female choir, which sound pensively and movingly, as though though a haze of recollections. "My Soul Yearnsfor Heaven" is a chours of an exalted philosophical content for twelve male voices. "It is Snowing" (1966), a small cantata to B. Pasternak's words, was written for a female choir accompanied by a chamber orchestra, the solo part sung by a small boys choir. A recording pf the "Triptych", the small cantatas "Wooden Russia" and "It is Snowing" and two chourses to Yesenin's words, which was in 1972 awarded the "Golden Orpheus" Grand Prix by the French National Academy of Recordings.
