The Mother of God of Vladimir is one of the oldest icons of the type Eleousa (Virgin of Tenderness). It is known in Russia since 1131 when she was taken from Constantinople to Kiev. The feasts are on 26 August (8 September) in the memory of the saving of Moscow in 1395, 23 June (6 July) in the memory of transporting the icon to Moscow and the victory over Tartars in 1480, 21 May (3 June) in the memory of the saving Moscow from Crimeans in 1521.

 

This Russian Orthodox Icon was painted by a modern professional church artist at the Russian town Rybinsk (not far from Moscow) that is one of the main and old centers of the Russian icon painting.

 

The icon was painted on a very old (at least 19 c.) wooden board covered with levkas (gesso, special priming) with egg tempera and gold paints that use the small parts of leaf gold. The style is traditional and strictly follows antique canons of the icon painting.

 

Size = 10.6x8.6x1 (27x22x2.5 cm). Weight = 752 gr.
