A classic slice of Seventies drive-in fare, Race With The Devil is undeniably tense, exciting and fun.
A movie that features excellent performances from its four leads, swift pacing, some genuinely creepy moments and lots of auto action.
Roger (Peter Fonda) and Frank (Warren Oates) are two old friends who head out from San Antonio in Frank’s 22-foot RV with their wives (Lara Parker and Loretta Swit) for a nice, long cross-country vacation. But shortly into the trip, while camped out one night, the men witness a group of Satanists performing a ritual human sacrifice -- and when the Satanists spot them, the chase is on as the two couples are pursued relentlessly across the arid Texas landscape toward a bleak conclusion.
With its plot as simple as can be and its characterizations kept to a minimum, Race With The Devil still turns out to be surprisingly effective and even chilling.
Fonda and Oates generate a genuine camaraderie, while Dark Shadows star Parker, as Fonda’s slightly “sensitive” wife, effectively communicates her character’s growing terror. Her best scene occurs when the couples stop at a tourist campsite after their first encounter with the Satanists; while swimming in the site’s pool, Parker becomes uncomfortably aware of a number of the camp’s visitors standing around and staring cryptically at her. It’s an unsettling moment that sets the tone for the rest of the film, in which it soon seems like everyone in Texas is in league with the devil.
The empty roads, flat plains and dead little towns --- all done on location -- capture that sense of isolation that vast expanses of America can convey so well, while sinister turns by character actor R.G. Armstrong and even director Jack Starrett leave the heroes -- Texan good ol’ boys for sure -- feeling like they’re travelling through an alien landscape.
